Lalala... A rag doll hat inspired by Lalaloopsy

My daughter has been pretty into watching Lalaloopsy cartoons on Netflix recently. To be honest, so has my son! Haha! One day recently I watched a little bit with them and decided that I absolutely needed to make a hat inspired by Lalaloopsy. The characters are just begging to be recreated in yarn, don't ya think???

Supplies:
1 skein of worsted weight yarn in your hair color. I went with blue at my daughter's request but you can pretty much do any color you want.
1 skein of worsted weight yarn in your skin color. Pretty much any of the neutral shades will do
2 buttons, at least 1” in diameter but larger if you'd like
Small amounts of black and pink yarn
Size I crochet hook
Yarn needle
Scissors
White ribbon (or any ribbon that coordinates well with your hair color)

Stitches used in this pattern:
HDC (Half Double Crochet)
SC (Single Crochet)
Magic Circle
Slip Stitch (sl st)
Chain (ch)
3HDC in one stitch

Notes
  • These stitch counts are based on medium/worsted weight yarn
  • ALWAYS begin in same stitch as your chain 1.
  • Your Chain 1 never counts as a half double crochet
  • The number in parentheses at the end of each round is the total stitch count for that round. Example: (44 HDC)

Hair

Chain 31.
Beginning in second chain from hook, 3HDC in each chain across. Fasten off. (90HDC). For adult size hats you could make your starting chain longer and for newborn hats, a bit shorter. It's all up to you!
Make 10.
Sew onto top of hat with five on each side.
Cut white ribbon long enough to tie bows. It helps to run the edges of the ribbon through a flame to prevent fraying but be careful not to burn yourself!

Eyes
Use two black buttons, preferably with four holes. I used one inch buttons because that was the largest I could get at the store that day, but I think slightly larger buttons would look better.

After sewing onto face, use black yarn to stitch eyelashes if desired.

Mouth
Chain 10 or so stitches. I started with 15 and pulled one out at a time as I adjusted the smile until it was the length I wanted. I ended up with 10 on a child size hat so you may need more or less depending on your hat size and how loose or tight you stitch. Fasten off and leave a long tail. Use the tail to sew the mouth onto the hat.

Cheeks

Magic circle in pink:
Row 1: 8HDC in magic circle. Sl st to join to first HDC of round. Ch 1. (8HDC)
For baby sizes, stop here. For child through adult sizes, continue to row 2.
Row 2: 2HDC in each stitch around. Sl st to join to first HDC of round. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing onto hat. (16 HDC)
Make two.

Stitch into place using the tail you left.

Weave in all loose ends and make everything neat. Enjoy!

As always, you may use this pattern for personal use or create hats to sell but please, please give credit to this blog by linking back to this post. I put a lot of hours and effort into these patterns and pictures. Thanks!
