A Very Blue Platypus

Funny story. We home school and last week my daughter started a unit study on the platypus. She's enjoying it but my son was not so impressed. “What??? I thought platypuses were BLUE!” He's devastated. Completely devastated. Perhaps we've watched a little too much Disney Channel in our home?

And so I bring you the latest pattern in the Toluver's Creation collection. A blue platypus, inspired by none other than Perry. It's too bad this hat is too warm to wear in the Florida heat in September because it would be awesome to wear at Epcot during Agent P's World Showcase Adventure. Maybe I'll bring it just for a photo op or two. My daughter and I are dressing like Phineas and Ferb, so we could do an awesome photo!

Supplies:
Turquoise Yarn
Orange Yarn
Small amounts of white and black yarn
Size F and I crochet hooks
Scissors
Needle

Stitches used in this pattern:
HDC (Half Double Crochet)
SC (Single Crochet)
Magic Circle
Slip Stitch (sl st)
Chain (ch)
SC decrease
SC increase
If any of these stitches are unfamilar to you, I recommend a quick search of YouTube for some excellent tutorials.

Hat notes:
  • Work with an I hook
  • These stitch counts are based on medium/worsted weight yarn
  • ALWAYS begin in same stitch as your chain 1.
  • Your Chain 1 never counts as a half double crochet
  • The number in parentheses at the end of each round is the total stitch count for that round. Example: (44 HDC)

Row 2: SC increase in first, SC in next 6, SC increase in last. Ch 1, turn. (10 SC)
Row 3: SC increase in first, SC in next 8, SC increase in last. Ch 1, turn. (12 SC)
Row 4: SC increase in first, SC in next 10, SC increase in last. Ch 1, turn. (14 SC)
Row 5: SC across. Ch 1, turn. (14 SC)
Row 6: SC decrease, SC in next 10, SC decrease. Ch 1, turn. (12 SC)

Row 11: SC increase in first, SC in next 12, SC increase in last. Ch 1, turn. (16 SC)

Fasten off. Weave in all loose ends.

On ONE of the two bills, continue with the following steps (same instructions for large and small bill):
Rejoin orange yarn in the fifth stitch from the right.
Beginning in same stitch where you rejoined:
Row 1: SC across the next 8 stitches. Ch 1, turn.
Row 2: SC decrease, SC in next 4, SC decrease. Ch 1, turn.
Row 3: SC dec, SC in next 2, SC decrease. Ch 1, turn.
Row 4: SC dec, SC dec. Ch 1, turn.
Row 5: SC dec in the remaining two stitches.
Fasten off. Weave in all loose ends.

Lay the two bill pieces directly on top of each other. The bill with the triangle piece should be on top.
Beginning in the upper left corner, SC around, through both layers. When you get to the small triangle piece, SC up and down the sides of just that piece, and then continue SC through both layers. This will leave a small opening for stuffing the bill.
Put a small amount of stuffing inside the bill.

Attach the bill to the hat. Use the picture as a guide. Sew the bottom of the bill to the last row on the hat and then stitch around the front triangle piece of the bill onto the hat.

Eyes
Begin with black yarn. Work with a size F hook. Make 2. Perry's eyes are big and silly so it's OK to use the same size regardless of hat size.

Magic circle with black yarn.
Round 1: 6 SC in the magic circle. Rejoin to first stitch of round. Ch 1. (6 SC)
Switch to WHITE
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around. Rejoin to first stitch of round. Ch 1. (12 SC)
Round 3: * SC in first stitch, 2 SC in next stitch. * Repeat * * around. Rejoin to first stitch of round. Ch 1. (18 SC)
Rounds 4-5: SC around. Rejoin to first stitch of round. Ch 1. (18 SC)
Round 6: * SC in first stitch, SC decrease next two stitches together. * Repeat * * around. Rejoin to first stitch of round. Fasten off. (12 SC)

Use small amount of stuffing in each eye. Attach to hat low, close to the bill. Use picture as guide.

Braids
Chain 11.
Beginning in second stitch from hook, sl st across. (10 Sl st).
Make three.
Sew to top of hat for Perry's “hair”.
