Nautical Fun with an Anchor Hat

Over the past weekend, we did some spring cleaning, which led to some redecorating. I had a lot of beachy decorations scattered all over the house in random spots and I really wanted to pull it all together. Plus, I needed to do something with my fireplace mantle. I had pulled it apart at Christmas and never did anything after. So we did some scrubbing and dusting and ripping apart.

Then came the fun part! Putting it all back together! I really love how the redecorating came together. Sorry there are no before pictures. It was really bad. Too shocking for the Internet, hahaha.

And that inspired me to want to make an anchor hat. I had seen some while scrolling pinterest but the thing I didn't like was that they all seemed to involve making the anchor in pieces and sewing it together. I wanted an anchor that was all one piece.

So I made one.

As my eight year old daughter would say, "Boom."

The hat uses my basic hat pattern, with a few small twists!

Supplies:
Medium/worsted weight yarn in two colors (I used red and white Loops & Threads Impeccable. A navy blue would look amazing as well. I just happened to be out of navy right now.)
A small amount of gray yarn
H and I crochet hooks
scissors
Yarn Needle

Working in the back loop only on alternating rows gives this hat a more interesting texture.

The Anchor
Work with an H hook

Step 1: Start with a magic circle. Chain 1 and then make 8 single crochet (SC) in the circle.

 Step 2: Pull it tight.

Step 3: Close circle with a slip stitch.

 Step 4: Chain 5.

Step 6: Turn; Beginning in the second chain from the hook, SC in the next four stitches.

 Step 7: Chain 12.

Step 8: Beginning in second stitch from hook and working in next five stitchs: treble crochet, double crochet, half double crochet, single crochet, single crochet. You are half done!

 Step 9: Chain 6.

Step 10: Beginning in second chain from hook, work in the next five stitches in this order: treble crochet in one stitch, double crochet in one stitch, half double crochet in one stitch, single crochet in next two stitches.

Step 11: Working back up towards the circle where you began, SC in each stitch. You should have 6 SC.

 Step 12: Chain 5.

Step 13: Starting in the second stitch from the hook, SC back towards the center, for a total of 4 SC. Slip stitch to join back to the circle you make at the beginning.

Step 14: Fasten off leaving a nice long tail. You will have a gap or rather large hole under your circle where the different pieces of the anchor meet back together. Using the tail and a yarn needle, sew that gap closed.

You may find that your finished product is not really shaped like an anchor just yet! Just pull and tug it until it is in the shape you want it to be. It may not be perfect but that's OK! When you sew it onto your hat, you will be able to force it to stay in place. Just stitch slowly, and pull the anchor into the correct shape as you go!

The Hat

NOTES:
 Work with an I hook.

You will switch colors after every two rows.

To create ridges that, in my opinion, give the hat a more nautical look, work every other row in the BACK LOOP ONLY.

ALWAYS begin in same stitch as your chain 1. Your Chain 1 never counts as a HDC.

You will have a lot of loose ends to clean up and weave in from switching colors. Also make sure you tightly tuck in the starting tail from beginning your magic circle.
Attach your anchor to the hat. Enjoy!
