Toluver's Creations: My Basic Hat Patterns

There are a lot of different instructions out there to make a basic hat. I'm not going to pretend to be inventing something new here! But I have used a lot of different people's patterns and tweaked them here and there to come up with my own version of the best possible pattern in different sizes. At least, in my opinion.

Unless a hat has a unique texture, it starts with a simple pattern like this. Here are some hats I've made that start with a basic pattern:

You could follow this same stitch count with double crochet instead of half double and you'd need less rows to make your crown-to-brim length correct. However, I think that a half double crochet stitch just gives a nicer, neater finished product when it comes to hats.

You'll have to note that I crochet fairly loosely so if you crochet a very tight stitch, you may want to jump up a size to get the correct number for your hats! The head circumference and the crown-to-brim length are the most important factors. It's always easier if you know the head circumference of the person before you begin! If not, going by age for young children and assuming teen/small adult will fit pretty much everyone else is a safe bet.

I will be referencing these instructions A LOT in the future, and if you follow along on this blog, you will get used to seeing these patterns over and over again!

These hats are all based on the magic ring or magic circle. This is a nicer, neater way to start any circular pattern because it can be pulled very tight and doesn't leave a hole on the top of the hat! If you are unsure how to do this, here are a few tutorials. I watched 3 or 4 tutorials before finding one I really liked and that made sense to me. Everyone is different!

Notes:

Work with an I hook

These stitch counts are based on medium/worsted weight yarn

ALWAYS begin in same stitch as your chain 1.

Your Chain 1 never counts as a half double crochet

Abbreviations used are HDC (Half double crochet) and SC (single crochet)

The number in parentheses at the end of each round is the total stitch count for that round. Example: (44 HDC)

Size: 0-3 Months (Head Circumference 13-14")

Begin with a Magic Ring:

Round 1: 11 HDC in magic ring. Join to first HDC. Chain 1. Pull ring tight. (11 HDC)
Round 2: 2 HDC in each stitch around. Join to 1^st HDC of round. Chain 1. (22 HDC)
Round 3: *HDC in first, 2 HDC in next stitch.* Repeat * * around. Join to 1^st HDC of round. Chain 1. (33 DC)Round 4: *HDC in first two stitches, 2 HDC in third stitch.* Repeat * * around. Join to 1^st HDC of round. Chain 1. (44 HDC)
Round 5: HDC in each stitch around. Join to 1^st HDC of round. Chain 1. (44 HDC)

Rounds 6-13: Repeat Round 5. You may choose to do more or less than 13 rows. I like my newborn hats to be roughly 5.5” from crown to brim.

Last Round: SC around. Join to 1^st SC of round. Fasten off.

Size: 3-6 Months (Head Circumference 15-16")

Begin with a Magic Ring:

Round 1: 11 HDC in magic ring. Join to first HDC. Chain 1. Pull ring tight. (11 HDC)
Round 2: 2 HDC in each stitch around. Join to 1^st HDC of round. Chain 1. (22 HDC)
Round 3: *HDC in first, 2 HDC in next stitch.* Repeat * * around. Join to 1^st HDC of round. Chain 1. (33 DC)
Round 4: *HDC in first two stitches, 2 HDC in third stitch.* Repeat * * around. Join to 1^st HDC of round. Chain 1. (44 HDC)

Rounds 7-15: Repeat Round 6. You may choose to do more or less than 15 rows. I like my 3-6 month hats to be roughly 6” from crown to brim.

Last Round: SC around. Join to 1^st SC of round. Fasten off.

Size: 6-12 Months (Head Circumference 17-18")

Begin with a Magic Ring:

Round 1: 11 HDC in magic ring. Join to first HDC. Chain 1. Pull ring tight. (11 HDC)

Rounds 8-17: Repeat Round 7. You may choose to do more or less than 17 rows. I like my 6-12 month hats to be roughly 6.5” from crown to brim.

Last Round: SC around. Join to 1^st SC of round. Fasten off.

Toddler/Preschooler (Head circumference 19-20”)

Begin with a Magic Ring:

Round 1: 11 HDC in magic ring. Join to first HDC. Chain 1. Pull ring tight. (11 HDC)
Round 2: 2 HDC in each stitch around. Join to 1^st HDC of round. Chain 1. (22 HDC)

Teen/Small Adult (Head circumference 21-22”)

Begin with a Magic Ring:

Round 1: 11 HDC in magic ring. Join to first HDC. Chain 1. Pull ring tight. (11 HDC)
