Little Pig, Little Pig, Let Me IN!

One of the most fun thing about character and animal hats is that they do more than keep your head warm. They are actually fantastic additions to a dress up collection. My kids are addicted to dress up games and we have an awesome collection. When other kids come over, pretty much all they ever want to do is play dress up. I do a lot of clearance shopping after Halloween to boost our collection but now I'm going to be adding some hats! And the first one I'm adding to the collection is a piggy hat that's perfect for playing Three Little Pigs! This hat is super easy to make!

(Sorry for the less-than-stellar picture. We have had lots of rain and little sun and I didn't get to use my good camera, which requires natural light.)

I think he's cute as-is but you could also dress this hat up quite a bit with the following suggestions:
  • Add a smile with black yarn
  • Add eyebrows with black yarn
  • Use dark pink for the inside of the ears (so make two light pink and two dark pink ears and then stitch together a light and dark)
  • Make the nose darker pink
  • Add a bow to make this little piggy a little more girly.

You'll use my basic hat pattern, of course! I'll include it at the end of this blog post or you can see it HERE.

Suppplies:
Pink yarn
Size I crochet hook
Yarn needle
scissors
white and black buttons

Stitches:
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet
sl st = slip stitch
ch = chain

NOSE

Magic Circle
Round 1: 8 hdc in the magic circle (8 dc for larger nose for bigger hat sizes). Sl st to join. Ch 1.
Round 2: 2 hdc in each stitch around (2dc in each stitch around for larger nose). Sl st to join. Ch 1.
Round 3: working in BACK LOOPS ONLY, hdc around (hdc for both smaller and larger nose).

Fasten off. Leave a nice long tail for sewing the nose on!

EARS

Make FOUR.

Small ear:
Chain 5.
Row 1: Beginning in second stitch from hook, hdc across. ch 1, turn. (4hdc)
Row 2: 2hdc in first stitch; hdc in next 2 stitches; 2hdc in last stitch. Ch 1, turn. (6hdc)
Row 3: hdc across. ch 1, turn. (6 hdc)
Row 4: 2hdc in first stitch; hdc in next 4 stitches; 2hdc in last stitch. Ch 1, turn. (8hdc)
Row 5-8: hdc in each stitch across.ch 1, turn. (8hdc)
Row 9: hdc decrease; hdc in next 4; hdc decrease. ch 1, turn. (6hdc)
Row 10: hdc decrease; hdc in next 2; hdc decrease. ch 1, turn. (4hdc)
Row 11: hdc decrease; hdc decrease again. ch 1, turn. (2hdc)
Row 12: hdc decrease. Fasten off. Leave a long tail for stitching it on.

Large Ear:
Chain 5

Row 1: Beginning in second stitch from hook, hdc across. ch 1, turn. (4hdc)
Row 2: 2hdc in first stitch; hdc in next 2 stitches; 2hdc in last stitch. Ch 1, turn. (6hdc)
Row 3: hdc across. ch 1, turn. (6 hdc)
Row 4: 2hdc in first stitch; hdc in next 4 stitches; 2hdc in last stitch. Ch 1, turn. (8hdc)
Row 5: 2hdc in first stitch; hdc in next 6 stitches; 2hdc in last stitch. Ch 1, turn. (10hdc)
Row 5-9: hdc in each stitch across.ch 1, turn. (10hdc)
Row 10: hdc decrease; hdc in next 6; hdc decrease. ch 1, turn (8hdc)
Row 11: hdc decrease; hdc in next 4; hdc decrease. ch 1, turn. (6hdc)
Row 12: hdc decrease; hdc in next 2; hdc decrease. ch 1, turn. (4hdc)
Row 13: hdc decrease; hdc decrease again. ch 1, turn. (2hdc)
Row 14: hdc decrease. Fasten off. Leave a long tail for stitching it on.

Place two ears together and either stitch together with a needle or single crochet around, working through other layers. It's up to you which method to use. Either one will work just fine.

TAIL

Make a chain the length that you would like your tail to be. I did 16 chains but you can go longer or shorter, it doesn't matter. Then single crochet twice in each stitch to make a curly tail. It should curl on it's own as you go. You could also hdc to make a thicker tail. It's all pretty customizable to your personal preferences. Fasten off, leaving a long enough tail to stitch it onto the hat.

EYES
I like to use a large white button with a small black button layered on top of it for eyes. You could also crochet black and white circles if you prefer.

ASSEMBLY:
Stitch everything together. I like to start with the nose, then add the ears and tail and finally the eyes.

Here's the hat pattern:

ALWAYS begin in same stitch as your chain 1. Your Chain 1 never counts as a HDC.
